Ban on Dismemberment abortions passes Ky. House Committee

Published on

For the third time in less than a week, a state legislative body has advanced a bill that would ban the horrific practice of dismemberment abortions.

On Wednesday, the Kentucky House Judiciary Committee approved HB 454 which would outlaw the savage procedure of killing a living unborn child by ripping and tearing the baby apart limb by limb.

A similar bill passed the Florida House March 1, almost exclusively along party lines with all but three Republicans voting in favor and all but two Democrats voting against. The bill moved to the state Senate where SB 1890 is sponsored by Sen. Debbie Mayfield.

The action came the same day the South Carolina Senate Medical Affairs Committee moved the bill to ban dismemberment abortions on to the full Senate. H3458 year overwhelmingly in the state House.

According to the pro-abortion Louisville Courier

The procedure [dismemberment abortion] was used in 537 of 3,312 abortions in 2016, according to the most recent state data available.

That is almost 1/6th of all abortions.

The Courier’s Morgan Watkins reported

What HB 464 would do is outlaw a procedure that is “gruesome, brutal and not necessary,” [state Rep. Addia] Wuchner said. …

Lexington physician Lynda Sanders, who testified Monday afternoon, supported the bill. Her voice wavered as she asked the committee why Kentucky wasn’t providing unborn children some degree of dignity in how their lives end.

By contrast, “Dr. Jennifer Hoffman spoke out against the legislation, which she said would criminalize safe treatment and interfere with her ability to provide patients with evidence-based medicine.”

Eight states have already passed bans on dismemberment abortions: Kansas (2015); Oklahoma (2015); West Virginia (2016); Mississippi (2016); Alabama (2016); Louisiana (2016); Arkansas (2017); and Texas (2017).

Dismemberment abortions are incredibly savage. Here is how NRLC’s Department of State Legislation describes them:

Dismemberment abortion is a brutal type of abortion with the purpose of causing the death of an unborn child, purposely to dismember a living unborn child and extract him or her one piece at a time from the uterus through use of clamps, grasping forceps, tongs, scissors or similar instruments that, through the convergence of two rigid levers, slice, crush, and /or grasp a portion of the unborn child’s body to cut or rip it off.
