Pope Francis announces Mother Teresa will be canonized in September

Published on

Pope Francis today confirmed that Mother Teresa–the “angel of the slums”–will be canonized on September 4. “The date on which she will be proclaimed a saint falls on the eve of the anniversary of her death, which occurred on September 5, 1997,” CNN reported.

Back in December 2015, Pope Francis announced that Mother Teresa, known worldwide for the work of her Missionaries of Charity in the slums of Calcutta, would become a saint. The Pope recognized the healing of a Brazilian man with multiple brain tumors after his family prayed to her to heal him as a second miracle attributed to Mother Teresa.

Pro-lifers also knew her as a passionate defender of unborn children, unafraid to speak truth to power. “But I feel that the greatest destroyer of peace today is abortion, because it is a war against the child, a direct killing of the innocent child, murder by the mother herself,” she said at the 1984 National Prayer Breakfast. In attendance were a host of pro-abortion Democrats, including President Bill Clinton and First Lady Hillary Clinton. Mother Teresa, accompanied by the late John Cardinal O’Connor, spoke at the 1985 National Right to Life Convention. For those of blessed to be there, it was an unforgettable moment. Here is just one of many tremendously inspirational passages from a woman who won the Nobel Prize:

And so, today, when are together, let us make one strong resolution. We will do everything on our part to prevail, not to destroy love. Life is created in the image of God.

To love and be loved. And that’s why today we are having such terrible evils happening everywhere. So much killing , so much destruction, And I always give the same answer. If a mother can kill her own child, murder her own child, what is left for others to do?

So, with this great, great love, [this] loving action, if you and I and each of us take the trouble to help the mothers, whoever they may be, wherever they may be, let us help them to want the child.

And if they don’t want them, tell them, “Mother Teresa and her sisters want them.”
