Nebraska Right to Life Reveals Bob Kerrey’s Pro-Abortion U.S. Senate Voting Record

Published on

Editor’s note. Former Pro-abortion Nebraska Senator Bob Kerrey has made it official. He will file for the Democratic nomination for Nebraska’s open U.S. Senate seat to replace Sen. Ben Nelson, who is retiring.

“If Bob Kerrey had his way, partial-birth abortion would still be legal, given that he voted against banning it five times while in the Senate,” said Julie Schmit-Albin, Nebraska Right to Life (NRL) Executive Director. “Pro-life Nebraskans rejected Ben Nelson after his abandonment of pro-life language in health care reform.  They are not going to embrace Bob Kerrey whose voting record on this issue is more abysmal than Ben Nelson’s ever was.”

Below is a compilation from National Right to Life (NRLC) of Kerrey’s voting record in the Senate from 1989 to 2000 on NRLC scored votes.

During his two terms in the U.S. Senate (1989-2000), Kerrey cast three votes in accord with NRLC’s positions, while he voted against NRLC 70 times, for a career Senate score of 4% (four percent).

Kerrey voted against the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act five times, and for NRLC-scored pro-abortion amendments to the PBABA twice.

In 1999, he voted for the Harkin Amendment to endorse Roe v. Wade (10/21/99).

Kerrey consistently voted against limitations on the use of federal funds for elective abortions (for example, in the S-CHIP program and the federal employees’ health program).  He also consistently voted against measures to protect a parent’s right to be notified before an abortion is performed on a minor daughter.

In 1995 Kerrey voted with NRLC on the “Teen Mother’s Child Exclusion” issue, where NRLC opposed an amendment to a welfare bill that would have resulted in “state policies skewed toward pressuring pregnant teenagers to obtain abortions…”  In 1997 Kerrey voted with NRLC on two issues — the Assisted Suicide Funding Restriction Act, and on a Medicare-related vote on the right to purchase unrationed insurance.

Nebraska Right to Life, a prominent pro-life organization in the state, recently unveiled its findings regarding Bob Kerrey’s voting record on abortion during his tenure in the U.S. Senate. The organization accuses Kerrey, a former Democratic senator and gubernatorial candidate, of consistently supporting pro-abortion policies. This revelation sheds light on Kerrey’s stance on a contentious issue and its potential implications for Nebraska voters.

Nebraska Right to Life’s Stance

Nebraska Right to Life is dedicated to advocating for the protection of human life from conception to natural death. As a leading voice in the state’s pro-life movement, the organization plays a significant role in shaping public opinion and influencing political discourse on abortion-related issues.

Bob Kerrey’s Background

Bob Kerrey is a prominent figure in Nebraska politics, having served as both a U.S. Senator and Governor of the state. He is a member of the Democratic Party and has been involved in various public service and philanthropic endeavors throughout his career.

Unveiling Kerrey’s Voting Record

Nebraska Right to Life’s revelation focuses on Kerrey’s voting record during his time in the U.S. Senate. The organization asserts that Kerrey consistently supported pro-abortion policies and legislation, aligning himself with the Democratic Party’s platform on reproductive rights.

Analysis of Key Votes

Nebraska Right to Life likely analyzed Kerrey’s votes on significant abortion-related legislation, such as funding for organizations that provide abortion services, restrictions on late-term abortions, and measures aimed at protecting the rights of the unborn. Their findings likely highlight instances where Kerrey’s voting record diverged from the pro-life position advocated by Nebraska Right to Life.

Implications for Nebraska Voters

The unveiling of Kerrey’s pro-abortion voting record by Nebraska Right to Life carries significant implications for voters in the state. Nebraska has a strong pro-life constituency, and voters may weigh Kerrey’s stance on abortion heavily when considering their support for him in future elections.

Political Context and Potential Impact

The revelation of Kerrey’s voting record on abortion comes amid a broader political landscape characterized by heightened polarization and debate over reproductive rights.

Alignment with Democratic Party Platform

Kerrey’s support for pro-abortion policies is consistent with the Democratic Party’s platform, which advocates for the protection of abortion rights and access to reproductive healthcare services. While this may appeal to some Democratic voters, it could alienate pro-life constituents in Nebraska.

Impact on Electoral Outcomes

Nebraska Right to Life’s revelation could influence voter perceptions of Kerrey and his candidacy in future elections. Pro-life voters may be less inclined to support a candidate with a documented history of supporting pro-abortion policies, potentially affecting electoral outcomes in Nebraska.

Conclusion

Nebraska Right to Life’s unveiling of Bob Kerrey’s pro-abortion U.S. Senate voting record underscores the organization’s commitment to informing voters about candidates’ positions on critical issues such as abortion. Kerrey’s alignment with pro-abortion policies carries implications for Nebraska voters, particularly those who prioritize pro-life values in their decision-making process. As the debate over abortion rights continues to shape American politics, the stance of candidates like Kerrey on this issue remains a focal point for voters and advocacy organizations alike.
