A study conducted by Lifeway Research revealed that approximately 40% of men whose partner or spouse had an abortion indicated that they played the most influential role in the decision to terminate the pregnancy. This information was conveyed by Michael Gryboski.
The study, sponsored by Care Net, comprised 1,000 men who had a female partner undergo an abortion and were aware of their partner’s pregnancy prior to the termination of the pregnancy. Indeed, three-quarters (74%) of men reported that their partner had informed them of her intention to have an abortion prior to the procedure being carried out.
A study conducted by Lifeway revealed that 38% of men claimed to have exerted the greatest influence on the decision to terminate the pregnancy. The next most frequently cited source of influence was medical professionals, with 18% of respondents indicating this as the case. The woman’s mother was the source of influence for 14% of respondents. Gryboski observed that only 4% of respondents indicated that the abortion provider was the most influential figure in the decision to abort.
“When we surveyed women who had abortions in 2015, they reported that men were the most influential factor in their decision,” Care Net CEO Roland Warren said in a statement.
“Care Net recognised that despite this influence, the role of men had not been explored. This new study directly examines their feelings and experiences when making the decision to have an abortion.”
The survey also found that 42% of men had either “strongly urged” or “suggested” that their partner have an abortion, while 31% gave no advice. Only 8% said they had “strongly urged” against abortion.
Some 34% of respondents were married to women who had had an abortion, while 29% were ‘living together’ and another 29% were ‘seeing each other’.
In an interview with the Christian Post, Lisa Hogan, the executive director of the Sav-A-Life Vestavia pregnancy resource center in Alabama, stated that her clinic has endeavored to enhance its efforts to include fathers.
When a mother contacts the clinic to arrange a pregnancy test or an ultrasound, and if she is considering an abortion, we advise her to bring the father of the baby to the appointment.
The programme employs male advocates who are trained to engage in one-on-one conversations with the fathers in question. The objective of these conversations is to facilitate a constructive dialogue, provide guidance and support, and ensure that the fathers are able to participate effectively in the process.
Hogan observed that her clinic sees approximately 1,000 fathers annually, informing them that, in the event of a pregnancy, they are already a father.
Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that the presence of a father figure in the life of a child is associated with a more favourable long-term outcome.
