Jackson Amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act would prevent taxpayer funds from being used to pay for abortion travel

Pro-abortion Democrats were angry when on Thursday House Republicans passed the Jackson Amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act.

Rep. Ronny Jackson (R-Texas) offered an amendment to correct a change made last year by the Biden Administration. On 20 October 2022, the Biden Administration’s Department of Defense (DOD) published a memorandum saying that the DOD must pay for travel and transportation for military members and dependents who travel to get an abortion. Previously, federal law had long prevented the DOD from performing or providing abortions.

The Pentagon’s policy allowing service members time off for an elective abortion and reimbursing them for travel costs related to the procedure was implemented last year following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, which gave states the authority to determine their own abortion laws. This information was provided by Landon Mion of Fox News.

“After the ruling, Biden reiterated his position that his administration is committed to protecting access to abortion.”

After the vote, Rep. Jackson said, “My amendment to stop Biden from using the DOD to pay for abortion trips passed. This policy is illegal, and soon it will be gone. This is a great day for our country.

Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), the first female combat veteran elected to the Senate, previously said, “The Pentagon should not be mobilised against the unborn. The Department of Defense exists to defend life, not to destroy it.

She added: “The Biden DoD policy is not only unlawful, it’s immoral. Congress has been clear; the Hyde Amendment protects taxpayers from being forced to fund abortions. I will continue to ensure that the unborn and your tax dollars are protected. Senator Ernst is a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

NRLC President Carol Tobias added, “Contrary to statements made on the House floor, it is not the Republicans who are trying to change the status quo. It is the Biden administration that wants to pick taxpayers’ pockets and illegally use that money to pay for abortion trips.
