Senate Democrats block effort to protect babies Born Alive following passage of radical state bills

By Jennifer Popik, J.D. Director of Federal Legislation

Pro-abortion activists and their extreme agenda of legalizing abortion for any reason until birth have been exposed in states across the country, notably New York and Virginia. In particular, there has been public outcry surrounding the comments of Governor Ralph Northam of Virginia which are tantamount to advocacy of infanticide. He said that that the child is born alive then the child would be resuscitated IF “that’s what the mother and the family desired”

Last night, on the heels of the furor that has ensued, Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) asked the Senate for unanimous consent to pass the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act (S. 311). If enacted, the bill would extend federal legal protection to babies who are born alive during an abortion.

However, Democrats, led by Patty Murray (D-WA), objected, stalling the bill for the time being.

“Pro-abortion Democrats should be forced to explain why their allegiance to the abortion industry agenda should allow a practice that is tantamount to infanticide,” said Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life. “Pro-abortion Democrats who oppose this bill should be forced to explain why it shouldn’t be a crime to treat a born-alive human person as a creature who may be subjected to lethal violence with impunity or as medical waste.”

This Senate action comes several weeks after the New York legislature passed, and Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) signed, the so-called “Reproductive Health Act.” Among other provisions, the RHA repealed protections for infants born alive during an attempted abortion. Previously, New York law stipulated that a second physician be present to care for a child 20 weeks or older born alive during an abortion. Cuomo was an enthusiastic supporter of the bill.

The Virginia bill was not enacted, at least not for now.

“The extreme pro-abortion agenda has been laid bare for all to see, thanks to the governors of New York and Virginia,” Tobias added.

National Right to Life and the pro-life movement continue to ask the Senate to take a roll call vote on this issue of extreme importance.

Below are the closing remarks from Sen. Sasse as he asked for unanimous consent to approve his bill.

The Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act prohibits exactly the kind of infanticide Governor Northam was endorsing. That is it. It is based on the simple idea that every baby deserves a fighting chance. It is a simple idea that every human being is an image bearer. Even the weakest and most marginalized among us is no less human, and every one of us has a moral obligation to defend the defenseless. It is my understanding that some of my Democratic colleagues are prepared to object tonight.

I humbly say that I don’t understand why, and I beg you from the bottom of my heart not to do so. Please don’t betray the ideals that have been so eloquently expressed. Please don’t reduce truths to There are two sides of the debate on the floor tonight. You are either for babies or you are defending infanticide. That is actually what the legislation is before us. Please don’t block this legislation. Please don’t let Governor Northam define you. Don’t let an extremist proabortion lobby and pledge hold you hostage. Please don’t protect infanticide. an empty campaign slogan, and please don’t take the principle of dignity and equality this cheaply.
