Pro-Life Texas Gov. Rick Perry Tells Hispanic Audience “Every Life is Precious”

Pro-life Texas Gov. Rick Perry, increasingly mentioned in political circles as a potential presidential candidate, unleashed a withering attack on the pro-abortion Obama administration at a pro-life gathering Sunday in Los Angeles.

The United for Life (“Unidos por la Vida”) event, held at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena, was sponsored by Manto de Guadalupe whose founder is Eduardo Verástegui. Pro-lifers remember Mr. Verástegui for his starring role in the powerful pro-life film “Bella,” winner of the 2006 Toronto International Film Festival’s “People’s Choice Award.”

The Associated Press reported that Perry “was greeted warmly by the crowd, and left to a standing ovation.”

Perry’s foundational remark (translated, as the entire speech was, into Spanish) was that “Every life is precious.” He blasted President Obama for anti-life initiatives at home and abroad, according to the AP.

Referring to Obama’s decision to end President Bush’s stem cell policy, Gov. Perry said,  the Obama administration was “turning the remains of unborn children into nothing more than raw material.” The Obama administration, he told the group, is ignoring “the overriding responsibility of every government — that is to protect citizens at every stage of their lives, especially those who cannot protect themselves.”

Perry criticized Obama for ending the pro-life “Mexico City policy” his first week in office. Under Obama “our federal tax dollars can now be used to fund abortion all over the world. With the stroke of a pen, abortion essentially became a U.S. foreign export,” Perry said.

Perry is the longest serving governor currently in office. He has a lengthy pro-life record, including helping make possible passage of an ultrasound law this session by making it a priority.

As we reported last week, Mr. Verástegui has opened Guadalupe Medical Center in Los Angeles to reach out to Hispanic and other women (www.nationalrighttolifenews.org/news/2011/06/%E2%80%9Cbella%E2%80%9D-star-opens-pro-life-medical-center/) Mr. Verástegui spoke at the 2007 National Right to Life Convention where “Bella” was shown.
