Adult stem cells save lives

Published on

Rob Waddell has undergone a kidney transplant, yet he does not take anti-rejection drugs to prevent his body from rejecting the transplanted kidney. The key lies in adult stem cells. These versatile, life-saving cells have numerous applications beyond tissue repair and maintenance.

Rob suffers from a genetic condition called polycystic kidney disease. As his kidney function deteriorated, he was informed by his physician that he would require a kidney transplant.

In the case of organ transplants, the recipient is typically required to take large doses of anti-rejection drugs for the remainder of their life in order to prevent the rejection of the transplanted organ. However, these drugs also have the potential to cause deterioration of the transplanted organ, particularly in the case of kidneys.

Rob participated in a clinical trial involving the infusion of bone marrow adult stem cells from a kidney donor. These cells integrated into Rob’s immune system, effectively “re-training” his body to recognize the donated kidney as his own.

Rob now leads a fully active life, without the need for anti-rejection drugs. This outcome can be attributed to the adult stem cell transplant. Adult stem cells have been demonstrated to possess the capacity to save lives.
