Gov. Shapiro threatens to cut off funding for award winning pro-life Real Alternatives

Published on

Should Democrat Governor Josh Shapiro’s proposals be enacted, some pregnant women in Pennsylvania may find themselves homeless this winter.

Shapiro has threatened to cancel the contract of Real Alternatives, which oversees Pennsylvania’s award-winning pregnancy and parenting support services programme. In addition to providing financial support to pregnancy resource centres and adoption agencies, the programme also funds maternity homes, which provide a refuge from homelessness for a number of women in Pennsylvania.

The current situation could be entirely avoidable if the Governor were to extend a new contract to Real Alternatives. By denying state funding to the organisation, the Governor is effectively denying pregnant women access to vital services that they require.

The programme has provided assistance to more than 350,000 women over its 27-year history. Indeed, the programme has become a model for the rest of the nation and has enjoyed bipartisan support over the years.

The legislature voted to provide an additional two million dollars to the program, bringing the total funding to more than eight million dollars. However, in a strategy that could be described as a bait-and-switch, the Governor announced his intention to use the additional funding to support an entirely different programme. It remains unclear whether the Governor’s threatened action to terminate the programme is constitutionally sound.

It is of the utmost importance that individuals make their voices heard, thereby conveying to their state representatives and state senators their support for Real Alternatives.
