Debunking pro-abortion claims, CDC’s provisional maternal mortality numbers for the post-Dobbs years show a decline in deaths

Editor’s Note: This post from AAPLOG challenges the assertion that the implementation of protective pro-life legislation has a detrimental impact on maternal mortality. In fact, the earliest data from the CDC, released in the wake of the Dobbs decision, indicates that the opposite is true.

The unsubstantiated assertion that the United States’ suboptimal maternal health outcomes are a consequence of its abortion regulations is detrimental to women.

In response to claims made by abortion advocates on social media, we provided a refutation and highlighted the factors that contribute to the maternal mortality crisis in this country. Nevertheless, this narrative, which attempts to link the 2021 surge in maternal deaths to the Dobbs decision, persists.

Indeed, the provisional maternal mortality figures released by the CDC for the period following the Dobbs decision indicate a decline in deaths. Research from a multitude of countries around the globe has consistently demonstrated that abortion legislation does not result in an increase in maternal mortality. Two countries with robust pro-life laws, Malta and Poland, have some of the lowest maternal mortality rates in the world.

An open and frank discourse on enhancing the health outcomes of American mothers is a pressing necessity. Such a discussion will encompass a range of pertinent topics, including the accessibility of genuine maternal healthcare (and not induced abortion), the alleviation of socioeconomic inequality, the extension of health insurance coverage to one year postpartum, and the implementation of efficacious institutional protocols for the management of common pregnancy complications.

The promotion of the intentional killing of embryonic or fetal human beings will have no impact on the wellbeing of their mothers. The false narrative that it does harm to women and girls serves a political agenda, rather than the women and girls themselves. It is our contention that our patients deserve better.
