Doctors at Temple University Hospital Save Baby Boy After Pregnant Mother Shot Dead

When officers found Matayah Haynes, a 19-year-old pregnant woman with gunshot wound to her head, they realized her unborn baby was still alive, WCAU-TV in Philadelphia reported.

The Philadelphia Police Department said officers rushed the Haynes and her baby to Temple University Hospital, according to the station.

Ms. Haynes, of Camden, New Jersey, “was about 34 weeks pregnant when she was shot on a street in Philadelphia’s Port Richmond neighborhood early Saturday morning,” according to Jack Gist.

“Officers rushed Haynes to Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, where surgeons were able to deliver the baby,” Gist wrote. “They could not save Haynes, however. She was pronounced dead just before 2 a.m.” The last reports list the baby boy as being in critical but stable condition.

Police had no motive for the shooting.

“Officers interviewed witnesses and were told that gunshots were heard and a male suspect fled in a dark-colored Chevrolet Camaro or Dodge Charger,” WCAU reported.
