Biden barely registers 40% job approval, bad news for Democrats

On individual issues, President Biden’s approval ratings have already sunk well beneath the 40% mark. But now his overall approval rating is just above that, a dismal 40.7%, according to the latest ABC News/Ipsos poll!

“Joe Biden’s approval ratings for his handling of these key issues [economy, inflation, and rising gas prices] are all well underwater, suggesting trouble for the president and Democratic candidates ahead of the midterm,” reported Hannah Demissie of ABC News. “Only 37% approve of Biden’s handling of the economic recovery, and even fewer approve of his handling of inflation (28%) and gas prices (27%).”

What did the public think of Biden’s handling of the abortion issue? It was equally shaky: Just 41% approved while 58% disapproved.

A separate question, asked what the single most important issue will be in their vote for Congress? “The top issues were inflation (21%), the economy (19%), gun violence (17%) and abortion (12%).”

Asked how important abortion would be “in your vote for Congress this November?,” 41% said extremely important, 22% said very important, 20% said somewhat important, 10% said not so important, and  6% said not important at all.

What about enthusiasm? Demissie explained that an April poll, there was a 20-point gap between Republicans and Democrats in enthusiasm to vote this November. “That gap has narrowed somewhat in this poll,” she wrote, “but Republicans still enjoy a significant advantage with 57% saying they are enthusiastic about voting compared to 44% of Democrats.”
