A Pennsylvania pregnancy center is celebrating an historic milestone.
Morning Star Pregnancy Services is marking 50 years of saving lives in the shadow of the state Capitol in the Keystone State.
As Executive Director Linda Plummer explains, in January of 1972, a group of people met to talk about the challenging circumstances facing many pregnant women. Three months after that, a telephone hotline opened to support women at risk for abortion in the greater Harrisburg area.
“In a society where life is not always valued, it is incredible that Morning Star has stood strong for five decades,” Plummer said. “We have not yielded to political climate, recessions or even pandemics. Just look at our impact in 2021: Even during the pandemic, 523 moms chose life for their babies!”
Grammy Award-nominated singer Nicole C. Mullen keynoted the pregnancy center’s anniversary banquet, where she shared her personal experiences as a single mother and as an adoptive parent. The evening of celebration also included a video of client testimonials about how Morning Star had assisted them during turbulent times.
Morning Star’s no-cost services include confidential counseling, pregnancy testing, ultrasound examinations, parenting education classes, baby clothing and supplies, STI testing and treatment, and outreach to women who have suffered the trauma of abortion.
As a result of its tremendous growth, Morning Star’s Harrisburg clinic moved into a 6,000-square foot building in the heart of Harrisburg in the fall of 2020. The facility includes four counseling rooms, two ultrasound rooms, an STI testing lab, an education room, and a baby boutique featuring infant clothes and handmade blankets. With its expansive facility, Morning Star is able to counsel more than 700 additional clients annually.
The numbers tell the story: In 2021, Morning Star hosted 2,365 client visits…provided 1,003 ultrasounds…and saved 523 lives. In this way, this premiere pro-life organization is providing a safety net for pregnant women and their children.
