Nothing is more important to the Democrat Party than expanding the killing of unborn children into every nook and cranny of our society

Columnist Matt Lewis’s piece in today Daily Beast is meant, I believe, to come across as a wringing of hands. How sincere any of it is, I cannot say, but here’s the gist of what he argues.

The Hyde Amendment—something pro-abortion President Biden supported for decades until that support became inconsistent with winning his party’s nomination—is an example of one of the “long-standing and popular compromises that are no longer politically tenable” for Democrats whose embrace of abortion has reached new heights (or depths).

Lewis tells us he is a “conservative” Republican but a “Never Trumper.” His argument is if Democrats really wanted people like him to come over to their side, they wouldn’t be taking purposefully provocative actions such as Biden’s “deliberate omission of the Hyde Amendment from his proposed 2022 budget.” {Hint: In the end, Lewis concludes Democrats don’t want anyone who hasn’t bought the whole abortion on demand, paid for by the public agenda hook, line, and sinker.}

What’s most interesting to us are Lewis’s very excellent examples of what is the “clear indication of the trajectory of the Democratic Party” of which attacking the life-saving Hyde Amendment is only one of many examples. There’s also this:

If Biden’s decision to exclude Hyde doesn’t serve as a significant enough symbolic shift, then consider how Bill Clinton’s “safe, legal, and rare” formulation evolved into Hillary Clinton’s cheerleading of Paxton Smith, a Texas valedictorian who misled her school and delivered a pro-choice commencement speech against Texas’s new “heartbeat bill.” In so doing, Biden and Clinton—the last two Democratic standard-bearers—delivered back-to-back examples of how the party has moved left on the issue of abortion.

“Moving left” is like saying the sun is hot at its core: true but a dramatic understatement. Democrats want to eliminate even the possibility that states can pass protective language, either with pro-abortion federal legislation (probably requiring the elimination of the filibuster) and/or by packing the Supreme Court with justices who would dance to the pro-abortion tune.

But their zealousness doesn’t stop there. It is not only substantively hugely distressing but worryingly symbolic of where Democrats now are that they won’t even allow a vote on a bill to require equal treatment of babies who survive an abortion. That is passive infanticide. Period. That ought to send a chill up everyone’s spine.

Democrats want to spread the abortion plague domestically by opening a spigot to Title X family planning dollars to abortion providers such as Planned Parenthood. Internationally? Read the New York Times’ Lisa Lerer, especially the last 16 words:

In office, Mr. Biden has reversed several Trump administration policies, including rolling back restrictions on abortion pills, removing a ban on federally funded medical research that uses fetal tissue from abortions, and reversing limits on funding for U.S. and international groups that provide abortion services or referrals.

One more time. How important is abortion to Democrats?

Pro-abortion Democrats, most of the major media, and those Republicans who cannot abide the former President argue he and his supporters are “existential” threats. Again, only they know if they truly believe their own apocalyptic language or are using it as a political bludgeon.

But note Lewis’ penultimate paragraph where we read

No doubt, the Democratic Party would love the votes of all of us who oppose abortion but not only are they unwilling to meet us halfway, they want our tax dollars to pay for something we find morally abhorrent. That’s not how you form a “grand coalition.”

Conclusion? Nothing—NOTHING—is as important to today’s Democrat Party as expanding the killing of unborn children into every nook and cranny of our society.
