The Rhode Island Senate Judiciary Committee will be voting this Tuesday, June 11, on a New York style abortion expansion bill (H5125 Sub A) that has already passed the Rhode Island House of Representatives. Please respond to this action alert to (1) email your state Senator right now, (2) call the Senate on Monday, (3) join us at the State House on Tuesday, and (4) spread the word at church this weekend.
While much of the public outrage about this extreme has revolved around the removal of protected legal status for an unborn child killed as a result of an attack on her mother, it is also important to remember the MANY other ways this bill expands abortion:
- Enables late-term, post-viability abortions due to inadequate definitions of “viability / health / necessary;”
- Creates a broad “non-interference” statutory framework that would prevent meaningful state regulation of abortionists, and which…
- Protects 2nd and 3rd trimester abortion methods such as partial birth abortions and dismemberment abortions of pain-capable unborn babies;
- Endangers young girls by eroding parental consent laws, allowing consent by a grandparent or sibling;
- Removes the penalty for experimentation on human fetuses.
Beyond these and other serious, particular problems, there is the startling reality that — for the first time in history — Rhode Island law would create and recognize a “right” to take the life of an innocent human being through abortion even though our state Constitution explicitly disavows such a “right.”
Under present law, thousands of abortions are performed each year in Rhode Island. Sadly, this deplorable situation would not automatically change even if Roe v Wade were to be altered or overturned. It is cynical for abortion advocates to use fear, uncertainty, and doubt to push a New York/ Virginia style abortion expansion bill in Rhode Island, making our state a haven for late term abortions.
Abortion proponents continue to lie about the level of public support. They falsely claim 71% support based on a poll conducted by the UNH Survey Center, which was rated as the second-least accurate pollster by 538.com data guru Nate Silver. The poll asked just one question which did not even accurately characterize the legislation. A poll conducted around the same time by WPRI/RWU, with a similarly inaccurate characterization of the legislation, claimed only 49%support.
The most comprehensive poll on the question shows clearly that the overwhelming majority of Rhode Islanders oppose what this legislation does — a result that is consistent with decades of national polling data and which was confirmed again just last week.
Thank you for doing everything you can to oppose this deceptive, barbaric, and extreme abortion agenda.
