As many as 3,600 pro-lifers flood Illinois state capitol to protest proposed pro-abortion laws

Illinois is among the handful of states where radical abortion bills have been proposed. New York has already passed its Reproductive Health Act. Vermont and Rhode Island are in the middle of their fights to “codify Roe” (the pretense for their laws), while pro-lifers in Virginia and New Mexico were able to thwart their anti-life bills.

Thousands of pro-life Illinoisians–as many as 3,600—flooded the rotunda of the state Capital last week. There were many there that state capitol security declared the Rotunda full and denied access to anyone else.

They were there to protest their version of the Reproductive Health Act and SB 1594 which would repeal the Parental Notification of Abortion Act of 1995.

The State Journal-Register reported that

House Bill 2495 and Senate Bill 1942 would create the Reproductive Health Act. The act would, among other things, repeal current abortion law, which has been in place since 1975. …

The bill provides that everyone has “a fundamental right to make autonomous decisions” about their reproductive health. It also makes it so a fertilized egg, embryo or fetus does not have independent rights under the law.

Cassie Buchman went on to quote Rep. Avery Bourne who said that

“It’s out of step with a majority of Illinoisans,” she said. “It’s more expansive than even what most pro-choice Illinoisans agree with.”

Bourne said to talk about prenatal health while also “stripping rights” away from an unborn baby is wrong and goes against bipartisan policy goals.

“When you dig into the weeds of this bill it is absolutely an extreme overreach,” she said. “It really is something to give away money, and really business, to the abortion industry. This is not about the mothers. This is not about the babies.”

On Friday, The Illinois Federation for Right to Life issued an Action Alert on SB 1594 (the Senate version of HB2467 ) which is reposted below:

CALL FOR ACTION: SB 1594 passes Committee now on Senate Floor

SB 1594 passed Senate Public Health Committee with a vote of 8 to 4 and is now on the Senate Floor in Second Reading.

If SB 1594 becomes law it would repeal the Parental Notification of Abortion Act of 1995 which…

*Is constitutional per the Illinois Supreme Court and the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals

*Mandates notification of a parent, grandparent or legal guardian when a minor seeks an abortion

*Provides a judicial waiver of notice for minors that are victims of physical or sexual abuse

*Has caused a decline in minor abortions by 57% from 2013 when first enforced to 2017 according to the Illinois Department of Public Health statistics (adults declined 15%)

*Has not triggered any reported incidents of abuse or neglect of a minor as a result of notification to the minor’s parent.

Missouri, Iowa, Wisconsin, Indiana. and Kentucky all have parental involvement laws. If the Parental Notification Act of 1995 is repealed Illinois will become the Midwest go-to-state for minors to obtain a secret abortion.

The Illinois Federation for Right to Life put forth a lot of time and effort and was instrumental along with other pro-life organizations in Illinois to pass Parental Notification. This bill has saved countless lives of babies and teen girls. Underage teens may not have all the information on making life or death decisions nor may not be aware of the effects that an abortion will have on her body or her emotional and mental state.

We can’t remove this important protection that was once approved of in Illinois. The Moms and Dads in Illinois do not deserve to have their parental rights undermined by their government nor teens lives endangered.
