Last week, Katherine Zappone, a woman who is meant to be the Minister for Children, sparked a storm of criticism when she give a strident speech in favour of legalising abortion in demand.

Zappone demanded that it was time to stop granting equal rights to preborn babies and called for abortion to be legalised. She had previously taken part in the ‘March for Choice’ last September which called for abortion to be available without restriction.

Some of the sharpest criticism in online forums came from those who saw the inherent contradiction in a Minister who had taken an oath to uphold the Constitution now attacking the rights of preborn children whose right to life is enshrined in the same Constitution.

Niamh Uí Bhriain of the Life Institute said that Zappone had tarnished the office of the Minister for Children, and that it was reprehensible for a government minister to argue in favour of the right to kill children before they were born.

Up to 30 pro-life activists protested the Zappone speech hosted by the Kennedy Summer School in New Ross, Co Wexford – almost more than the number attending the Minister’s speech.

The Minister was also picketed when she visited schools in New Ross in the days following her speech.

And New Ross priest, Fr Roger O’Neill, strongly criticised the Minister’s abortion push in his sermon that Sunday, saying “it almost commands that I speak about it because there is an irony that the Minister for Children would be promoting the murder of children in the womb.” Fr O’Neill told the Wexford Guardian that he had later received a very positive response from parishioners.
