Thanks go out to our friends at SPUC–the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children–for alerting us today that the British government through its Department for International Development (DFID) has announced that over the next five years the UK will spend over a billion pounds (more than a billion and a half in US dollars) on “family planning” —including access to “safe abortions.”

International Development Secretary Priti Patel officially announced the plan at a major Family Planning Summit “co-hosted by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the UN,” the Independent reported.

Already the second biggest funder of family planning programs in the world, Britain has given abortion provider Marie Stopes International alone well over $200 million in the past five years. “This is despite a recent ComRes poll showing that 65% of the public oppose UK taxpayer money being spent on abortions overseas.” SPUC noted.

The summit, held in London, is focusing on providing contraception, according to SPUC. But last week Ann Furedi, who heads BPAS the other major abortion provider in Great Britain, insisted “the answer to unsafe abortion is not contraception, it is safe abortion.
