As we reported, last week pro-life Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad signed a $7.2 billion budget bill that included defunding abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood. The state is forgoing $3 million in federal funding and using it own money “to recreate its own family planning network so that it can prohibit the funding of clinics that provide abortions,” reported William Petroski of the Des Moines Register.
“The current system that used federal Medicaid money will expire June 30, according to the Iowa Department of Human Services,” the Associated Press’s Barbara Rodriguez and Linley Sanders reported. “Participants will automatically be transferred to the new state-run program, which covers the same services as long as they are not sought at a clinic offering abortions. Department spokeswoman Amy McCoy said participants will need to bring proof of coverage to receive those services.”
According to Rodriguez and Sanders, Planned Parenthood of the Heartland has 12 clinics prior to the upcoming four closures.
“The reallocation of our tax dollars, away from the abortion industry, and into the hands of true health care facilities will only empower more Iowa women,” said Jenifer Bowen, spokeswoman for Iowa Right to Life, NRLC’s state affiliate.
In response to the good news, Bowen sent out this encouraging alert:
Planned Parenthood of the Heartland, Iowa’s largest abortion provider, JUST announced they are closing FOUR more webcam abortion clinics!
On June 30: Burlington, Keokuk, and Sioux City will CLOSE for good!!!
Bettendorf will be closing shortly thereafter too!
This brings the total to TWENTY Planned Parenthoods closing their doors in Iowa since 2010!
Ben Hammes, a spokesman for Gov. Branstad, told the Associated Press, “The pro-life movement is making tremendous strides in changing the hearts and minds, to return to a culture that once again respects human life.”
In her alert, Bowen concluded by saying
Thank you, Governor Branstad!!
Iowa has now seen the completion of the most Pro-Life legislative session in decades, by the most Pro-Life Administration and Legislature!!
As Lt. Governor Reynolds likes to say, “We are just getting started protecting unborn children!”
