My Tuesday evenings are spoken for, so I did not see pro-life President Donald Trump’s first address to a joint session of Congress last night when he actually delivered it (I watched it later, along with a lot of the commentary.)
Just as I offered a few thoughts ahead of his speech yesterday , let me very briefly offer a very few thoughts following a speech that was so good even professional Trump haters such as the Washington Post’s Chris Cillizza grudging conceded
This was the best “big” speech he has given as president. It may well have been the best speech Trump has given since he entered politics way back in June 2015.
From our single-issue perspective, the most notable moment was President Trump’s tribute to the Justice Antonin Scalia:
Finally, I have kept my promise to appoint a Justice to the United States Supreme Court — from my list of 20 judges — who will defend our Constitution. I am honored to have Maureen Scalia with us in the gallery tonight. Her late, great husband, Antonin Scalia, will forever be a symbol of American justice. To fill his seat, we have chosen Judge Neil Gorsuch, a man of incredible skill, and deep devotion to the law. He was confirmed unanimously to the Court of Appeals, and I am asking the Senate to swiftly approve his nomination.
As we noted yesterday, among the most encouraging signs for the new Trump administration were the results of recent polls. Specifically
“According to a new Morning Consult/POLITICO poll, 56 percent of Americans think Trump is keeping the promises he made on the campaign trail,” Eli Yokley wrote. Only 27% said he is not.
A very good night.
