SPUC has launched a new leafleting campaign, urging voters in Northern Ireland to use the ballot box to choose pro-life candidates and reject advocates of legalized abortion.
Elections are being held on March 2, following the collapse of power sharing last month. SPUC is focusing its campaign on high-profile seats and candidates.
“Northern Ireland has steadfastly resisted every effort to implement the legalization of abortion which would inevitably result in a slaughter of innocent babies,” said Liam Gibson, SPUC’s Northern Ireland development officer, “and SPUC has been in the vanguard of opposition to bring the law into line with the rest of the UK [United Kingdom].”
Targeting disabled babies
One of the key seats the campaign is focusing on is South Antrim, where former Alliance leader David Ford has promised to reintroduce a private members’ bill to legalize abortion when babies are diagnosed with life-limiting conditions.
Despite a public consultation by the Department of Justice on similar proposals which found that 97% of people rejected any change in the law, repeated attempts are being made to allow abortion in cases of “fatal fetal abnormality”–a term rejected by medics.
It is vital that this route to legalizing abortion be stopped, says Mr. Gibson. “MLAs who advocate proposals to target babies with life-limiting conditions for legalized killing will table plans as soon as they return to Stormont,” Gibson observed. “That’s why on March 2 we are urging people to vote only for pro-life candidates. Even a second, third or fourth preference vote can help the pro-abortionists.”
A matter of life and death;
“The NHS, education, jobs, the economy – they’re all important,” continued Mr. Gibson. “But for unborn babies, Polling Day is much more than that. For them, it’s a matter of life or death.”
Don’t make the same mistakes
John Smeaton, SPUC’s chief executive, also spoke about the campaign. He said Northern Ireland must not follow the route the rest of the UK has taken, where 550 babies are killed by abortion every day.
“Northern Ireland has another chance to make a stand for the innocents,” he said. “I ask everyone to contact their candidates urging them to vote against the legalization of abortion.
“And I would encourage all voters to take a look at what has happened in the rest of the UK and learn from our mistakes. Make sure you vote only for pro-life candidates as they can and will make a difference in the fight for the rights of the unborn child.”
