As a father/grandfather I have been on the receiving end when family members have sprung news of a surprise pregnancy. So I know something about jaws dropping.
But nothing to compare–not by a hundred miles–with Gina, the mother of Isabel Berrios.
The family caught last month’s incredible surprise and joy and happiness on video and posted to YouTube. Berrios’s medical background helps us understand why everyone was so wildly happy.
In March 2010, Berrios was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. According to WGN-TV, “her oncologist told her that she may never be able to have children.”
But there was a big surprise in store for this cancer survivor–and perhaps an even bigger one for her family. She was pregnant, a positive pregnancy test revealed, results confirmed by her doctor.
So Berrios gathered up her nieces and siblings November 5 and gave her perplexed mother Gina a stuffed elephant and a card. (“It’s not my birthday,” she says quizzically.)
The card read: “Dear Mama, Please save this for me at your house. Mommy and Papi already have one for me at theirs. Thanks! See you June 2017!”
As you watch the video, clearly Mama is trying furiously to process what this means. And then her mouth opens and then freezes in a stunned look of utter surprise and happiness. The video then turns to Berrios who is shedding tears of joy.
It is one emotional scene.
As noted in the card, the baby is due in June. Making it even better, this month Berrios is celebrating six years cancer-free.
