Stacey is the latest celebrity to come out and say how glad she is that she chose life over abortion
Singer and reality TV star Stacey Solomon has revealed how close she came to aborting her first child – and how seeing the look on her own mum’s face made her realise she couldn’t go through with it.
The mum-of-two, who finished third on The X Factor and won I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! In 2010 was just 17 when she first became pregnant.
As Stacey, 26, explained on daytime TV show Loose Women, she was initially worried about the stigma attached to being a young single mother.
“I’m too young … I can’t do it”
“I was 17 when I got pregnant with Zacharay,” she said, “And I think it’s because all of the stigmas around how old ‘you should be’ when you have a child.
“The first thing I thought was I have to make a decision and not have a baby right now because I am 17 and I’m too young and I can’t do it.”
Stacey added that her family told her they fully supported whatever decision she would make, but in the end it was seeing the pain abortion would cause her baby’s grandmother that forced her to reconsider.
“She just filled up with tears”
Describing how she went to the hospital to undergo an abortion, Stacey told viewers: “I ended up going, to do what I had to … I can’t even bring myself to say it. To do what I had to do, what I thought I had to do.
“My mum came with me and I remember laying there, they turned the monitor away from you so you can’t see what’s there.
“I remember seeing my mum’s face, and although she had no facial expression she just filled up with tears. I could see all the emotion in her and at that moment I knew that I just couldn’t go through with it.”
Stacey now has two sons – Zachary, 8, and Leighton, 4 – and says that having chosen life she knows what it’s like to be on the receiving end of social stigma for being a teenage mother:
“I spent a lot of my childhood walking around with a baby in a pram and that was hard, I know what it feels like to have people looking at you and now that my life is really quite open I can imagine the comments.”
Katie Price and her son Harvey
As SPUC reported earlier this year, Katie Price revealed on the same programme that she would probably have had an abortion had she known that her son Harvey would be born disabled – but that she is so glad she chose life for her son.
Katie added that witnessing her son’s life has since changed her attitude towards disabled people, and she would also now consider adopting a child with disabilities.
