The results of a poll conducted by Middle Tennessee State University reaffirm what Tennessee Right to Life leaders have said for years: the Volunteer State is strongly pro-life.
In a random telephone survey of 603 registered voters statewide, the MTSU found a total of 53% said abortion should be illegal in either all cases (22%) or most cases (31%). By contrast a total of 39% said abortion should be legal either in all cases (14%) or most cases (25%).
Naturally, the story in places like the Daily News Journal and the Times Free Press did not focus on the 14 point spread [53% to 39%] or the greater number that said abortion should be illegal in all case than said abortion should be legal in all cases [22% to 14%].
Instead it quoted Ken Blake, director of the poll at Middle Tennessee State University, who said opposition to abortion “runs highest among Tennessee’s evangelical Christian and Republican voters.”
When you go to actual poll data, that is true enough. But…
47% of Independents said abortion should be illegal either in all cases (28%) or in most cases (19%). That is more than the 44% who said legal in all (27%)or in most cases (17%).
Even among Democrats, 24% said abortion should be illegal in all cases and another 10% said illegal in most cases.
