I decided to wait a day or two to see how indicative Monday McClatchy-Marist poll numbers were of President Obama’s popularity. They were the worst but other surveys also show the President well under 50% approval.
“Overall, the poll found Obama’s job approval at 41 percent last week, a sharp drop from April’s 50 percent and his worst showing in the poll since 39 percent in September 2011,” wrote David Lightman for McClatchy. “Forty-eight percent disapproved in the latest poll, up from April’s 46 percent.” This is the lowest point since September 2011.
Even worse was the public’s response to Obama’s handling of the economy. Only 37% of the respondents approved, while 56% disapproved.
”Clearly six months into his second term there’s been falloff across the board,” said Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist Institute for Public Opinion at Marist College in New York, which conducted the poll. “It’s not like one group bailed on him.”
Those numbers were slightly worse than what was found in other polls. An ABC News/Washington Post poll out this week. Only 49% of Americans say they approve of the way the president is handling his job. Only 45% approved of his handling of the economy.

Likewise a NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll also found Obama’s approval at 45%, while 51% disapprove of his handling of the economy.
In May 51% told the Pew Research Center poll they approved of Obama. In June that sank to 49%. The latest approval number is 46%. “Just 33% of whites approve of the job Obama is doing as president, while 60% disapprove,” according to Pew, among Obama’s lowest numbers ever.
