Visually, at least, this could be worse than Gosnell.
I know that’s hard to believe. But new media accounts and photos allegedly from an abortion facility in Texas have led a high state official there to use words like “disgust,” and “appalling,” and demand an investigation.
Kermit Gosnell is the Philadelphia abortionist found guilty of multiple counts of murder for killing babies who were born alive in his abortion clinic. The attention his trial brought to the tragedy of late abortions has caused people to speak up about alleged atrocities in other facilities around the country.
These cases deserve investigation, and if true, prosecution under the law. But in all the cases, the testimony of one clinic worker stands out for its chilling horror.
The New York Times reported May 15 that the Harris County, Texas district attorney’s office said “it would investigate charges that a Houston doctor had delivered live babies during third-trimester abortions and killed them after they emerged.”
According to the Catholic News Agency on May 21, three former staff members have spoken up about alleged atrocities at the clinic.
I begin with a warning that what has been reported is graphic and troubling to read.
According to the Catholic News Agency report, one of the former staff members said: “When he did an abortion, especially an over 20 week abortion, most of the time the fetus would come completely out before he either cut the spinal cord or he introduced one of the instruments into the soft spot of the fetus in order to kill it . . . or actually twisting the head off the neck with his own bare hands.”
Texas Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst wrote “I read with disgust about the allegations of . . . illegal late-term abortions surrounded by appalling sanitary conditions . . . The Harris County authorities should perform a full-scale investigation and take action against those who broke state law.”
There are more such troubling stories about late abortionists and what allegedly goes on in their facilities. According to a new video tape by the group Live Action, LeRoy Carhart, who is infamous as the defender of the practice of partial-birth abortion in two U.S. Supreme Court decisions, describes how a baby he aborts softens like “meat in a Crock-Pot.”
Lifesitenews reported that a witness to the trial of a Florida abortionist said a clinic staffer “cavalierly stated that yes, babies were delivered into the toilet all the time and many times are still alive, wiggling around in the toilet.”
Dr. Anthony Levatino, an obstetrician-gynecologist and former professor at Albany University Medical School, testified before Congress last year on how some of these late abortions are performed. To view his short testimony, click below, but again, be forewarned that the description is graphic.
There is a way to stop this carnage. National Right to Life has helped create and pass effective laws in nine states that stop the horror of painful elective late abortions. The laws are called the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, and they ban elective abortions at the stage when compelling medical evidence shows an unborn baby can feel pain.
When our law was passed in its first state, Nebraska, it stopped LeRoy Carhart from doing late abortions there. But tragically, he simply packed up his deadly instruments and began performing abortions in another state.
This demonstrates these late abortions won’t end until we outlaw them everywhere!
That’s why we are so excited that U.S. Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.) is authoring a bill that will ban these abortions nationwide when a baby is capable of feeling pain, which compelling medical evidence indicates occurs by 20 weeks in the womb, if not earlier. The first hearing on what will become the nationwide Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (H.R. 1797) will be held Thursday, May 23rd at 10:00 a.m.in the U.S. House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice.
