Former Gov. Sanford wins South Carolina Runoff, Faces Pro-Abortion Democrat in May 7 Special Election

Mark Sanford

National Right to Life PAC and South Carolina Citizens for Life PAC have endorsed pro-life Mark Sanford (R) for election to the U.S. House of Representatives for South Carolina’s First Congressional District.

Sanford is a former governor (2003-2011) and former member of the U.S. House (1995-2000).

Sanford won the April 2 Republican runoff, defeating Curtis Bostic, a former Charleston County Council member, by a margin of 57% to 43%.

The vacancy was created when pro-life Governor Nikki Haley appointed pro-life Rep. Tim Scott (R) to replace pro-life Senator Jim DeMint (R), who resigned to head the Heritage Foundation.

Sanford will face pro-abortion Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch in the May 7 special general election. Busch is best known as the sister of entertainer Stephen Colbert.

“In his eight years as governor of South Carolina, Mark Sanford signed five reasonable and balanced pro-life laws that protect unborn children and pregnant women,” said Lisa Van Riper, president of South Carolina Citizens for Life, the state NRLC affiliate. “The federal political action committee of South Carolina Citizens for Life endorsed Mark Sanford in his race for the South Carolina Congressional District One seat.”

There is a stark contrast between Mark Sanford and Elizabeth Colbert Busch on life issues.

During his tenure in Congress Mark Sanford had a strong pro-life voting record, including votes to ban partial-birth abortions and votes against using taxpayer dollars to pay for abortion.  Pro-life legislation signed into law by Sanford as governor included an ultrasound law, a fetal homicide law, and an informed consent law requiring at least 24 hours to elapse between transmission of essential information and an abortion.

Busch supports the current policy of abortion on demand, which allows abortion for any reason. She also supports ObamaCare, which will provide government funding for health plans that pay for abortion on demand, and will promote the rationing of lifesaving medical treatments.

Sanford opposes Obama’s pro-abortion, pro-rationing health care plan, and will vote to repeal it.

Mark Sanford is a strong advocate for life. He voted for and signed into law many pieces of pro-life legislation. National Right to Life looks forward to working with Mark Sanford to restore legal protection for innocent life-unborn children and medically disabled or dependent persons whose lives are threatened by abortion or euthanasia.

All voters who are concerned with the right to life and with the protection of the most vulnerable members of the human family should vote to return Mark Sanford to Congress, so that he can continue to work to advance vital pro-life public policies.

While Sanford is favored, the special election is expected to be close.
