A 24-year-old mother of one died Friday night after undergoing a second-trimester abortion at a Chicago Planned Parenthood clinic–and the family of Tonya Reaves is demanding answers.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office said Reaves died of a hemorrhage, “with complications from the procedure as well as the pregnancy itself as a contributing factor,” the Daily Mail reported. “Her death was ruled as an accident.”
But Tonya’s twin sister, Toni Reaves , told WBBM-AM that her family is demanding answers.
“It happened so fast,” Reaves said. “She was just fine one day — and then the next day she was gone. We’re just trying to figure out what happened.”
“We were born the same day,” Reaves told the Chicago Tribune. “She was my other half.”
It was not immediately clear whether Tonya Reaves died at the abortion clinic on Michigan Avenue or at Northwestern Memorial Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Planned Parenthood of Illinois CEO Carole Brite said in a written statement, “We were shocked and saddened upon learning of a tragic development at a nearby hospital. Our hearts go out to the loved ones of this patient. …While legal abortion services in the United States have a very high safety record, a tragedy such as this is devastating to loved ones and we offer our deepest sympathies.”
Tonya left behind one son – Alvin – who had just celebrated his first birthday.
