The National Network of Abortion Funds (NNAF) is using its website to tell its followers that the more than $468,000 it raised last month through its “Bowl-a-Thon” is being put to “good” use. Under the headline “Getting an abortion means getting a second chance,” a 14-year-old identified as “Darcy” praises NNAF for providing the money she needed to abort.
Darcy tells us it would be too hard on her mother to know she was pregnant and trying to get an abortion, “But in the state where I live, minors can’t get an abortion without permission from a parent or a judge. So I did end up telling her.” This hurts her mom, “but in the end she was there with me and supporting me.”
But this is where NNAF uses Darcy to toot its own horn. The abortion would cost more than their rent and Mom only had enough money to drive her to the abortion clinic, Darcy tells us. “My clinic helped me contact you all for help. There’s no way that me and my mom could have come up with that much. Getting my abortion means I’m going to get a second chance. And I want to make it count.”
The sad ironies were everywhere. That unborn child, of course, doesn’t get even a first chance.
And Darcy’s own story—“I definitely want to start my own [veterinary] practice so that I make enough money and when I have kids I can be home with them”—is what you expect from a young girl who doesn’t realize she already HAS a kid.
“Darcy’s story is also featured in the organization’s spring 2010 newsletter that states she contacted the George Tiller Memorial Abortion Fund for help,” reports CNSNEWS.com. Darcy says, “Y’all were just so nice,” adding, “I mean, you gave me like more than a thousand dollars. There’s no way that me and my mom could have come up with that much.” A thousand dollars means that this baby was quite advanced.
Early in her account Darcy tells us, “My mom has tried my whole life to shield me from being hurt.” It is sad beyond words that Darcy did not, could not shield her own baby from the ultimate hurt.
