Pro-Life Perspectives: “Black Pro-Life Pioneers–Mildred Jefferson”

By Dave Andrusko

Dr. Mildred Jefferson

I have been out of the office for several days, but I wanted to make sure that I did not fail to alert our readers to a wonderful Pro-Life Perspective program that aired yesterday and can be heard at www.prolifeperspective.com.

National Right to Life President and Pro-Life Perspective Host Carol Tobias begins her discussion with a quote from “the incomparable Dr. Mildred Fay Jefferson,” an early President of National Right to Life who died in 2010. Quoting Dr. Jefferson, Mrs. Tobias says

“…the fight for the right to life is not the cause of a special few, but the cause of every man, woman and child who cares not only about his or her own family, but the whole family of man.”

Dr. Jefferson lived a life of “firsts.” The first African-American woman to graduate Harvard Medical School, Dr. Jefferson became an eloquent and tireless leader of National Right to Life and the entire right to life movement.  As Mrs. Tobias explained, the program was dedicated to Dr. Jefferson “as we kick off our month-long look at four courageous and steadfast pro-life pioneers in the African-American Community as our contribution to Black History Month.” She added, “These Black Pro-Life Pioneers have actively worked to protect all children but have sought to bring to light the particular dangers of abortion to the black community.”

A founder of both Massachusetts Citizens for Life and National Right to Life, Dr. Jefferson served three terms as NRLC President. She served on the NRLC board until her death in October 2010. You will want to listen to this program at www.prolifeperspective.com to hear about a woman who broke barriers at virtually every turn.

Next week Mrs. Tobias looks at the life of Mrs. Kay Coles James, a former NRLC Communications Director who rose to become one of the most highly-placed African-American women in the administration of President George W. Bush.
