Friday’s brawl over the government budget deadline and federal funding for Planned Parenthood was replete with disingenuous statements. If you didn’t know better, you would think the only service PPFA offers is cancer screenings. (See Part Two for a clear explanation of PPFA’s dependency on abortion to fatten its bottom line.)
Since there will be many more fights, including this week, let’s clear away some of the underbrush surrounding the Continuing Resolution.
You can only do what you can do [plus a little bit more, based on grit and ingenuity] when pro-lifers control only the House but the pro-abortionists rule the Senate and hold the presidency. So it’s more than a half-full glass perspective when you look at what came out of negotiations with a President who would shut the federal government down before allowing a cut in PPFA’s funding.
(Obama’s aides leaked the story that in an eleven-hour meeting with pro-life Speaker John Boehner, Obama said, referring to a cut in PPFA funding, “Nope, zero” and “John, this is it.” If ever we needed proof-positive that Obama is an out-and-out pro-abortion absolutist, this is it.)
Regardless of the outcome this time, it is vitally important that pro-abortion Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nv.) agreed to allow a vote on a separate measure to defund Planned Parenthood. (As you know the House did its part on February 18.)
Keeping the Democratic Party’s unyielding fidelity to the Abortion Establishment a secret has been a major priority for Democrats. And that most definitely includes that (according to its own report) in 2009 PPFA aborted 332,278 babies—one dead child every 95 seconds. There are 23 seats currently held by Democrats that will be contested next year.
Two other important considerations to keep in mind. First, in May, there will be a vote in the House on the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act. This would enact a permanent, government-wide prohibition on funding of abortion and health plans that cover abortion, in all federal programs.
Second, PPFA is reporting a sizable bump in contributions and online/social networking activity. While the magnitude may be inflated, doubtless the hysteria generated a lot of response.
So, please be an active participant in NRLC’s Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/pages/National-Right-to-Life/286781440146. It’s a wonderful way to keep updated and pass along vitally important information.
And please remember that the face of the pro-life Movement on Capitol Hill is, and always has been, National Right to Life. When good things happen, it is because of what NRLC’s staff is doing to persuade lawmakers to do the right thing.
