Irony was on grand display at this week’s budget address by pro-abortion Democrat Governor Josh Shapiro. The Governor, who has made abortion the hallmark of his administration, began his address to a joint session of the state legislature by saying, “Let’s start with our kids.”
Shapiro launched into his wish list for the 2024-25 budget, which included increased funding for organizations that promote abortion. He wrapped up his pitch by saying that “women and girls deserve to make their own choices about their own bodies,” ignoring the fact that, in pregnancy, the body of the preborn child is at stake.
Shapiro’s hour-and-a-half-long budget address was punctuated by Planned Parenthood posts on X, gloating that, for the first time in three decades, the proposed state budget included no money for alternatives to abortion.
Sadly, the Shapiro Administration canceled its contract with Real Alternatives last year. Real Alternatives had ably run Pennsylvania’s award-winning Pregnancy and Parenting Support Services program for 28 years. The program, considered a model for the rest of the nation, included scores of pregnancy resource centers, maternity homes, and adoption agencies throughout the Commonwealth.
Still, advocates for life in Pennsylvania remain undaunted. We are boldly returning to the state legislature, asking legislators to push for a restoration of funding for help for pregnant women in challenging circumstances.
We know that, when dollars are invested in assisting pregnant women, abortions decline. In a Commonwealth where more than 34,000 abortions take place in a given year, the need for comprehensive counseling and support for pregnant women is greater than ever.
