After a heated public meeting during which many pro-life residents shared their opposition, the Alexandria City Council voted on Saturday April 15, 2023 to allow abortion businesses to open in commercial and mixed-use areas thereby creating storefront abortion centers.
For over a week, the public had been able to send messages to the council members regarding this new rule. In the end, the Alexandria City Council members voted unanimously to allow abortionists to be treated as any other storefront business. Abortion promoters are hoping that these facilities will attract women from other states as Virginia is rapidly becoming a destination for abortions.
The mayor of Alexandria, Justin Wilson, who is outspokenly pro-abortion, made it clear that the council members had the authority to do as they wanted and that if the citizens of Alexandria don’t like it, they could just wait till the next elections.
“The council members don’t seem to care that abortion facilities are bad for local business establishments and are not welcomed by many shopkeepers and other offices,” said Olivia Gans Turner, president of Virginia Society for Human Life (VSHL). “Nor do they seem to care that ambulances are a common sight outside abortion facilities when an abortion goes wrong and a woman requires emergency care,”
Gans Turner added, “VSHL urges every concerned citizen of Alexandria to remember this vote and the dismissive attitude of the members of the City Council. Elections do have consequences, and so do the extreme positions taken by elected official.”
