Stop Taxpayer Funding of Abortion in Virginia

By Olivia Gans Turner, President, Virginia Society for Human Life (VHSL)

This week the General Assembly will attempt to vote on a new budget for the Commonwealth Virginia. Members of the General Assembly are in conference now to reconcile the Senate and Houses version of the new Budget before the 2023 General Assembly session ends on Feb. 26th.

Governor Glenn Youngkin sent a particular budget amendment to the General Assembly that would conform Virginia to Federal law under the Hyde Amendment that determines tax funding of abortions. Under federal law only abortions to protect the life of the mother and those for rape or incest are covered under Medicaid funding. However Virginia has also allowed the funding of abortions when the baby has been diagnosed with a serious disability. There is no definition and so this could include any disability or disorder, including Down Syndrome!

Please use the VSHL Legislative Action Center to send your message immediately to your Delegate and Senator to ask them to support the Governor’s amendment.
