Claire Culwell is a survivor.
Her survival instincts initially kicked in when she was still in her mother’s womb.
Claire survived the abortion that killed her twin, and lived to tell about it.
Claire spoke at a banquet sponsored by Pennsylvanians for Human Life Education Services in Springfield, Pennsylvania.
Once Claire learned the circumstances of her birth, she chose to forgive her birth mother, Tonya, who had been pressured to abort by a family member.
At one point, Claire decided to invite Tonya to the set of the movie Unplanned, a film about protagonist Abby Johnson’s transformation from a Planned Parenthood director to pro-life advocate.
When she was on set, Tonya wept from the immense sorrow stemming from her abortion. She remarked, “If God can forgive her (Abby), I wonder if He can forgive me?”
In her book Survivor: An Abortion Survivor’s Surprising Story of Choosing Forgiveness and Finding Redemption, Claire recounts turning her personal misery into ministry. An introvert, she moved boldly out of her comfort zone to share her survival story in the public arena.
She says that she only has to look in a mirror to be reminded of her ordeal. “I think about my twin. And I think about what happened to us.”
Claire is committed to educating people about the devastation that abortion causes to both preborn children and their mothers.
“If only someone had educated her (her birth mother), would my twin be standing next to me?”
