Unborn Children

For sure, the sound of an unborn baby’s heartbeat can definitely turn a parent’s own heart in the direction of life

By Maria V. Gallagher, Legislative Director, Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation

We talk early and often about the remarkable power of visuals to promote life. For instance, it is hard to argue against the humanity of a preborn child when you see the baby’s ultrasound image on social media.

In addition, still photos of an unborn child at various stages of development, such as those included in National Right to Life’s Diary of an Unborn Child, are eye-openers.

However, less attention is focused on another sense—the sense of hearing—in changing hearts and minds. For example, how many pregnant women and the fathers of preborn children have been brought to tears when hearing their child’s heartbeat for this first time?

The rapid pulsations signify life in its tiniest, earliest, and most vulnerable form. The sound of an unborn baby’s heart beat can definitely turn a parent’s own heart. This connection allows Moms and Dads to embrace the preborn child in an altogether new way.

I wonder if you are like me in this regard. I am astounded by the continuing power of radio in our visually-saturated world. So many people remark that they have heard me on the radio talking about issues ranging from taxpayer funding of abortion to student pro-life essay and oratory contests.

They remember both the message and me. They may find themselves more receptive to the pro-life cause because of what they have learned on a radio broadcast. As a result, their minds (and hearts) may be opened.

Something else with game-changing implications for our movement: the popularity of pro-life podcasts (audio segments you can listen to on your iPhone or computer). People can learn so much about legislation, educational programs, and the pro-life leaders of our day through this form of high-tech entertainment.

The beauty of podcasts is that you can listen to them on your own time—while cooking, doing yard work, running, or some other activity. This provides pro-life information on the go for those who might not have the time to attend a webinar or workshop.

You can check out the Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation’s LifeLines Radio podcast, for instance, at https://www.paprolife.org/lifelines-radio .

Through these and other various audio means, pro-life advocates are raising their voices on behalf of the voiceless in our midst. By speaking up for those who cannot speak for themselves, we are educating and inspiring.

We are using the tools available in our high-tech 21stcentury world to make the planet safe for preborn babies once again.
