From the Associated Press: “WASHINGTON — Vice President Kamala Harris will speak Thursday with abortion providers from states with some of the nation’s strictest restrictions to thank them for their work, the White House said.”
According to the AP, the meeting will be virtual and Vice President Harris will “listen” to “medical professionals” from Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Missouri and Montana. She will “emphasize that the Administration will continue to defend women’s constitutional rights and protect access to abortion,” according to the White House.
This outreach is Harris’ second meeting with representatives of the Abortion Industry since Politico leaked a first draft opinion in which Justice Samuel Alito called for Roe to be overturned. Her first was May 3rd when Harris delivered a speech to the pro-abortion EMILY’s List. Her remarks were greeted with glee by the New York Times.
Indeed, according to Michael D. Shear and Alisha Haridasani Gupta of the Times, it meant nothing short of “Harris Emerges as the Voice of Abortion Rights in the Biden Administration.”
WASHINGTON — With three words last week, Vice President Kamala Harris inserted herself forcefully into the roiling debate over abortion rights — and may have finally seized on an issue that is popular among key Democratic voters, plays to her strengths and is central to the future of her party.
“How dare they?” she demanded.
So, who else to meet with abortion advocates than Vice President Harris?
Look how her first meeting—at We Are EMILY 2022—was received?
The threat to abortion rights presents Ms. Harris an opportunity to recover from early political stumbles during her first year in office, including becoming entangled in two of the most difficult debates: immigration and voting rights. President Biden deputized Ms. Harris to take the lead on those subjects, both of which are mired in controversy and delay.
Second, “Now, Ms. Harris has a chance to become the voice of the administration on a subject which is complicated for her boss.” President Biden first utter the word “abortion” when Justice Alito’s draft opinion calling for Roe to be overturned was leaked to Politico.
Vice President Harris undoubtedly will meet often with abortion supporters in the years to come. She will lean into her new roll which promises greater visibility and a press corps that will, rather mock her, hang on her every word.
