A colleague passed along “13 phrases US doctors want removed from our vocabulary about abortion,” manna from heaven for the pro-abortion set which is determined to bury the brutality of abortion in a soft bed of euphemism. Senior Quartz reporter Annalisa Merelli tells us that ACOG—the pro-abortion- to-the-hilt American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology–has just come up with a new handy dandy “guide” for how to “talk about abortion.”
“ACOG Guide to Language and Abortion” begins with a truth:
The language we use when discussing reproductive health has a profound impact on what people hear and learn.
However it’s all downhill from there:
Much of the language that is colloquially used to describe abortion or discuss health policies that impact abortion has a basis in anti-choice rhetoric and is inherently biased and inaccurate—and at the very least, is not medically appropriate.
What triggered this? Well, in a sense it is nothing new. The pro-aborts at ACOG are still seething over “unborn child” in “lieu of fetus.” Granted, no one throws a baby shower for a “fetus,” but still.
No doubt the immediate explanation is the “Heartbeat” bill. No, no, no, ACOG insist, that is NOT medically accurate. (It is, but let me stay on point).
You can read ACOG’s guide for yourself, but everything you would ever need to know is captured in its ham-handed treatment of the hated term “late term abortion.” According to ACOG, “Late-term abortion has no clinical or medical significance.”
“Term” historically referred to the 3 weeks before and 2 weeks after a pregnancy’s due date. To be even more clinically accurate, ACOG now refers to early term (37 weeks through 38 weeks and 6 days of gestation), full term (39 weeks through 40 weeks and 6 days of gestation), late term (41 weeks through 41 weeks and 6 days of gestation), and postterm (42 weeks of gestation and beyond)—and abortion does not happen in this period.
Did you catch that? In its effort to be “clinically accurate,” ACOG define’ “early term” as “37 weeks through 40 weeks and six days of gestation.” By the way “post term” –42 weeks and beyond– doesn’t exist because, you know, “abortion doesn’t happen in this period.”
You can’t make this stuff up.
