New Poll supports Mississippi law heard by the Supreme Court, mounting support for reversing Roe v. Wade

By Dave Andrusko

Whenever you read something like “Majority oppose overturning Roe v. Wade: poll,” rest assured that the results will indicate the public does not know what Roe legalized and when given only a partial explanation of Roe allow, favors rolling back the “right” to abortion.

Such was the headline to Julie Manchester’s story in yesterday edition of The Hill. She is referring to a new Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll survey which found 54% opposing overturning Roe but 46% saying they supported repeal.

It should be noted that the results are much closer to an even split than found in almost any other poll. This is very significant.

But what is most immediately relevant is what it says about Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. This is the case the Supreme Court heard last week that involves a Mississippi law that protects unborn babies after 15 weeks.

On closer inspection of the survey of 1,989 registered voters conducted from November 30 to December 2,  we find

*“Most would support moving the viability threshold to 15 weeks instead of 24 weeks,” said Mark Penn, the co-director of the Harvard CAPS.

* “When given the additional context that the court ruled that a woman had the right to an abortion until the first 24 weeks of pregnancy, 32 percent said they were in favor of repealing Roe v. Wade entirely and leaving abortion laws up to the states. ”

*”Twenty-four percent said they believed the date to have an abortion should be rolled back from 24 weeks of pregnancy to 15 weeks of pregnancy, while just 8 percent said the period to have an abortion should be extended to 36 weeks.”

In other words, a total of 56% would either repeal Roe entirely [32%] or roll back when women can have abortion from 24 weeks to 15 weeks [24%].

And, of course, what Roe really allows is essentially abortion up until birth. Imagine, if you will, what percentage would want to overturn Roe if they knew that?!
