Pro-lifer surpass 100 benchmark in pro-life legislation passed in 2021

By Dave Andrusko

The pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute for the first time has tabulated over 100 “restriction on abortion” in a single year.  Guttmacher’s Elizabeth Nash, who tracks state legislation, told Shefali Luthrathe of The 19th that 19 state houses had passed 106 “abortion restrictions” thus far in 2021.

‘It’s important to remember that 1,336 abortion restrictions have been enacted since Roe v. Wade was decided in 1973, and in many cases they pile up one by one to have similar outcomes as outright bans,” Nash complained. “Each new individual restriction forces people to navigate another barrier, and any one restriction — new or old — may be the restriction a patient cannot overcome.”

Of course what “abortion restrictions” are to anti-lifers are laws intended to protect women and unborn children to pro-lifers. That why “Texas, which effectively outlawed most abortions, was not even in the top five states in terms of the number of abortion restrictions enacted” is powerful encouraging news.

Also bear in mind that laws which have multiple pro-life provisions are counted as more than one, thus increasing the overall number. That notwithstanding, Arkansas topped the list with 20 “limitations.”

After Arkansas, “Oklahoma passed 16 new restrictions on the procedure, including a so-called ‘trigger law’ which would immediately outlaw abortions if the Supreme Court overruled Roe v. Wade,” Luthrathe wrote. “Indiana, Montana and South Dakota have each enacted nine new restrictions.”

While other restrictions either have or will take effect this year, “that includes laws limiting how or when someone can receive a medication abortion.”
