El Salvador Congress overwhelming rejects proposal to weaken strongly pro-life law

By Dave Andrusko

Rejecting recent trends In Latin America, El Salvador’s Congress voted 73 to 11 yesterday to maintain the nation’s strongly pro-life law. The overwhelming vote was on a petition brought in September by pro-abortionist seeking exceptions.

“We have legislated in favor of protecting life from its conception,” Rebeca Santos, congresswoman for the ruling New Ideas party, said following the vote.

Referring to the constitutional right-to-life article passed in 1998, legislators said this made any changes impossible. Three times the El Salvadorian Congress has refused to amend the law to return to its pre-1998 status.

Populist President Nayib Bukele has backed the protective language. Last month, he declared that his government would not propose language to decriminalize abortion. “I have decided, to dispel any doubt, not to propose any kind of reform to any items related to the right to life (from the moment of conception).”
