Changing our perspective changes our point of view and how we respond

By Maria V. Gallagher, Legislative Director, Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation

I woke up in the middle of the night with a thought dangling in my brain: When the eyes change, the heart can begin to change.

It seemed to me that what my dream was communicating was the idea that, when we begin to look at life from a different perspective, not only does our point of view change but also the core of our being can begin to be transformed. I know it was true in my case.

When I began to be exposed to articles and books which brilliantly articulated the pro-life cause, my heart began to melt. I ached to help women and their preborn children, to offer the support and solace necessary to prevent abortion.

But that life-changing course correction only occurred after I had exposed my eyes to photos depicting the physical development of the unborn child.

Only after I had read the truthful depictions of the brutal procedures which end that beautiful preborn child’s life.

Only after I had pored over the tear-stained testimonies of women who had undergone abortions and who now regretted the irreversible act with every fiber of their being.

This is why the pro-life movement puts such enormous emphasis on education. We need to educate our family members and friends, public officials and policy-makers. We need to think of ourselves as teachers whose classroom often extends to cyberspace, in tweets and posts and shared content online. So many eyes are on us as we shed the light of truth on the culture of death.

The eyes have been called the windows to the soul. I cannot count how many times my eyes shed tears of sorrow at the loss of so many lives to abortion—more than 62 million and counting in the U.S. alone. But my eyes have also shone with complete and utter joy when a preborn baby I had kept in my thoughts and heart was spared from abortion.

Despair is not an option, not when we know that life is a fundamental good and that life will triumph in the end. The eyes of our nation will one day see the coming of the rebirth of the culture of life. And it will be due to the small strides pro-life advocates make each day to make our country more hospitable to pregnant women and their unborn children.
