Recently, National Right to Life received a call from Bishop Peter Christensen of Boise, Idaho, informing us of a campaign he is preparing to conduct on a diocesan-wide basis which he is calling “I Shall Give Half.”
In a letter distributed to Catholic Idahoans this past weekend, Bishop Christensen noted that Congress recently passed the American Recovery Act, which, in addition to providing economic stimulus payments to Americans who qualify under the bill’s criteria, appropriates hundreds of millions of dollars in government spending without the protection of the longstanding Hyde Amendment. In short, those appropriated funds can be used to pay for abortion.
In his letter Bishop Christensen recalled the words of Zacchaeus to Jesus in the Gospel of Luke: “Behold half of my possessions, Lord, I shall give to the poor, and if I have extorted anything from anyone I shall repay it four times over.” He encourages parishioners in the Diocese of Boise who are eligible to receive a stimulus payment to donate as much as half of that payment (or an amount they are able) to the pro-life organization of their choice. He specifically encouraged gifts to National Right to Life.
Kansas City, Kansas Archbishop Joseph Naumann, who chairs the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops Committee on Pro-Life Activities, and who has been a frequent speaker at National Right to Life conventions over the years, shared Bishop Christensen’s campaign with every bishop across the country. Archbishop Naumann called it a “very creative idea in response” to the passage of the American Rescue Plan Act and encouraged them to consider a similar campaign in their own dioceses.
The efforts of Bishop Christensen and Archbishop Naumann come at a time when the right-to-life movement is facing extraordinary challenges: a Biden-Harris administration determined to enshrine abortion-until-birth, paid for with taxpayer dollars as the law of the land, a Pelosi-Schumer pro-abortion Congress prepared to implement that extreme agenda, and a mainstream media apparatus ready to help them every step of the way.
We know that our ultimate success hinges on our perseverance in the face of evil. We must and we will continue to persevere. We must and we will continue to stand ready.
Already, National Right to Life has received several generous donations as a result of Bishop Christensen’s campaign. Those donations will help us persevere and will be used to grow our efforts to educate Americans about the humanity of the unborn child and the dangers of abortion, infanticide, assisted suicide, and euthanasia.
If you are in a financial position that you are able to join Bishop Christensen’s campaign, we would ask that you consider donating a portion of your economic stimulus payment to National Right to Life’s life-affirming and live-saving programs at www.nrlc.org/donate.
As the oldest and most experienced single-issue grassroots pro-life organization, we assure you that every contribution we receive will be used as effectively and efficiently and strategically as possible to advance the cause of life.
All of us at National Right to Life are grateful to Bishop Christensen, Archbishop Naumann, and all who work daily to protect God’s most defenseless children.
Working together, we can touch hearts, change minds, and save lives.
Working together, we will succeed in restoring a society that respects the dignity of every innocent human life.
