Misunderstanding yet again who single-issue pro-lifers are

By Dave Andrusko

It is a ritual of sorts, as regular as the swallows returning to Capistrano. On those occasions when, as is the case with the Biden/Harris team, pro-abortionists win the presidency, we are told our Movement is “divided” over [fill in the blank].

Likewise, pro-abortionists are [also fill in the blank] but the gist is (understandably) pleased. They won.

So let’s take a look at a story that appears in today’s Washington Post, owned by the richest man in the world. The occasion—the “hook” for the story—is today’s March for Life which because of the COVID-19 pandemic,  is online rather than filled with hundreds of thousands of pro-life activists marching down Pennsylvania Avenue.

We are told pro-lifers are divided over –“at a crossroads” over –“whether Donald Trump has helped or harmed their cause.”

Pardon?

If by that they mean that single-issue pro-lifers are of two minds about President Trump, with a handful of exceptions, that simply is not true. Any reader of NRL News Today could offer from memory the many invaluable  contributions the Trump administration made to our cause, including the much-underrated protection of religion and conscience.

However, if what is meant by that is that individuals for whom abortion is an issue—even an important issue—but one of many, then of course it’s true. Many of them will inevitably be sympathetic to pro-abortion Democrats, finding them closer to them on issues other than abortion than are conservative pro-life Republicans.

President Biden will be a test-case of sorts for them. They have told themselves and single-issue pro-lifers repeatedly that Biden is not a pro-abortion extremist but on abortion (like other issues), a “moderate.”

In addition, they will reflexively tell us that the number of abortions will go down, whomever is in the White House. So don’t worry. The “arc of history” is for the number of abortions to go downwards.

Of course, eight days in, “moderate” President Biden was already busy signing executive orders to pave the way to unleash federal dollars to fund abortion providers at home and abroad. He has also made it abundantly clear that ending the life-saving Hyde Amendment is a high priority.

What if you had the opportunity to read the Democrat Party’s platform, or listen to Vice President Kamala Harris (who is an abortion extremist in anyone’s book)? You’d know they are eager to stack the Supreme Court with pro-abortion justices; lower the federal government boom on states passing pro-life legislation; and pass legislation to make it impossible for any of us to opt out of involvement—direct or indirect—in the killing of unborn babies.

What about the tiresome but oft-repeated misnomer that the number of abortions will go down whether the occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue is a pro-life Republican or a pro-abortion Democrat?  A moment’s  honest reflection provides the answer: The numbers have gone down when the likes of Barack Obama are President in spite of their best efforts to grease the skids for Planned Parenthood and the entire Abortion Industry.

What Biden/Harris would fervently like to accomplish is deliver on the promise that abortion will be legal for any reason or none, through the entire nine months of pregnancy, paid for by taxpayers,  shackle pro-life states, and—as a bonus—help make possible the creation of an international “right” to abortion.

This didn’t get the attention it deserves. When she was running for her party’s presidential nomination, Harris said if she won (to quote from USA Today), “she’ll push to require states with a history of violating abortion rights [having passed pro-life laws] to clear new abortion restrictions with the Justice Department.”

So when Louisiana or Kansas or any other pro-life state tries to pass protective legislation, they’d need to get preapproval from the Biden/Harris Justice Department. Wow!

We’ve written dozens of times about all that President Trump did for our Movement. All the historical revisionism (and there will be plenty) can’t change what he accomplished.

Nor can all the assurances about “moderate” President Joe Biden change that he and Vice President Harris will work hand in hand to accomplish the Abortion Industry’s #1 goal: reverse the decades-long trend of the number of abortions decreasing.
