Abortionist Leah Torres, who has gained notoriety for her shocking tweets, has had her medical license suspended in Alabama just a month after announcing she would be the new medical director at the West Alabama Women’s Center, an abortion business which is facing a criminal investigation for the death of a patient. The Alabama Board of Medical Examiners stated that “LEAH N. TORRES, M.D. may constitute an immediate danger to her patients and/or the public.”
Torres was an abortionist at Planned Parenthood’s Metro Health Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, before taking the position in Alabama. According to CEC for Life, the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners ordered Torres’ license, which was temporary, to be suspended due to fraudulent information Torres provided on her application.
A letter to Torres from E. Wilson Hunter, General Counsel for the Alabama State Board of Medical Examiners, stated that Torres had “committed fraud in applying for a certificate of qualification to practice medicine in Alabama.” She was ordered to “immediately CEASE and DESIST from the practice of medicine in the State of Alabama.”
The Board also stated that Torres had engaged in “unprofessional conduct”:
… [Y]ou have committed unprofessional conduct as defined in the rules promulgated by the Medical Licensure Commission; specifically, you have made public statements related to the practice of medicine which violate the high standards of honesty, diligence, prudence, and ethical integrity demanded from physicians licensed to practice in Alabama…
This statement could be in reference to Torres’ abundance of shocking statements on social media, including claiming that God “performs way more abortions than I do.” She has also stated that she believes not wanting to be pregnant is a legitimate “medical reason” for abortion, and recently stated that no one who opposes the killing of children in the womb should become an OB/GYN. “I don’t care if you have religion. I don’t care if you have moral issues,” she said. “If you can’t do abortion care, don’t go into OB-GYN — just don’t.”
Thousands of doctors have attested to the fact that abortion is not health care and that deliberately killing a child in the womb is never medically necessary. Torres’ belief that a desire to no longer be pregnant is a “medical reason” for abortion shows the abortion industry’s willingness to take the lives of children in the womb at any point, for any reason.
Tragically, this is allowed under U.S. abortion law. Roe v. Wade and its sister Supreme Court ruling Doe v. Bolton which allow for abortions to be committed for any reason at any time. Doe v. Bolton states that even if a child can survive outside the womb, any reasoning may be used to instead abort that child, including “all factors — physical, emotional, psychological, familial, and the woman’s age — relevant to the wellbeing of the patient.”
But Torres is perhaps most well-known on social media as the abortionist who claimed that preborn children “can’t scream” because she cuts their cords first. While the context of the tweet makes it unclear whether she was referring to vocal cords or to the umbilical cord, she claims she meant the latter. Regardless, the statement itself is horrific and inhumane.
Torres is now banned from practicing medicine in Alabama until the complaint is heard by the Medical Licensure Commission which will determine if her license should remain suspended. She has until September 21 to appeal the decision, and the hearing is set for December 21, 2020, at 10 a.m. in Montgomery.
