New Directed Health Measure from Nebraska Dept. of Health & Human Services Prohibits Elective Procedures which should include abortions

By Nebraska Right to Life

A new Directed Health Measure issued by the Nebraska Department of Health & Human Services as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic  prohibits elective medical procedures which should include abortions. It reads

2.” Elective surgery and elective procedures are hereby prohibited. For the purposes of this order, this means a surgery or elective procedure that is scheduled in advance because it does not involve a medical emergency.  Surgeries or procedures that must be done to preserve the patient’s life or physical health, but don’t need to be performed immediately are allowed by a case by case determination of the medical provider.”

Currently, it is Nebraska Right to Life’s understanding that Planned Parenthood facilities in both Omaha and Lincoln continue to do both surgical and chemical abortions as does LeRoy Carhart in Bellevue.

“It is up to law enforcement in Omaha, Bellevue, and Lincoln to enforce the Nebraska DHHS new Directed Health Measure and not selectively decide to ignore the fact that it prohibits elective procedures,” said Julie Schmit-Albin, Executive Director of Nebraska Right to Life. “As a pro-life Administration, Governor Pete Ricketts and Nebraska DHHS have said that the new Directed Health Measure includes abortions and we hope that law enforcement will take that to heart if the abortion facilities in Omaha, Bellevue and Lincoln continue operating during these COVID-19 restrictions.”
