R.I. Legislature Now in Recess–Worst Session in History for the Pro-Life Cause

Beginning the counter attack

Dear Friend of Life,

It is simply not possible to exaggerate the magnitude of our defeat. While we must not despair, neither can we pretend that the General Assembly session that ended last night was anything other than the worst session in history for the pro-life cause in Rhode Island.

Neither is it possible to exaggerate the magnitude of the monstrous betrayal committed by House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello and Senate President Dominick Ruggerio. Along with Governor Gina Raimondo, Mattiello and Ruggerio will be forever remembered as Rhode Island’s architects of abortion for having created a first ever “right” under state law to take the life of an innocent human being. And contrary to their own lies, the lies of their sycophants, and the lies of local media outlets, the abortion law they actively pushed through goes far beyond the present status quo, which will become apparent to all over the next few years as it is fully implemented.

But please do not get discouraged to the point of giving up. No matter how bad things have now become, the Adversary and his minions are already preparing and plotting even lower levels of wickedness and depravity. We have lost a major battle, but the war goes on. Who will continue fighting for unborn babies and stand against assisted suicide if you lose heart?

I myself wanted to walk away after the awful events leading up to Wednesday, June 19. But I realized that nearly 50 legislators stood strong for life, some of them brilliantly! What kind of message would we send to them if we give up, lose heart, and disappear. For the last ten days I have walked over to the State House, as I have been doing nearly every day the legislature has been in session for the past ten years. And I made sure to personally thank, face to face with a handshake or a hug, each and every legislator who did right by us and stood for life. And I let them know that we are not going anywhere… the fight for life goes on and we are honored to continue fighting alongside them.

Thanking them, and hearing their own determined zeal for life, has also encouraged me to begin preparing our counterattack. Just two votes in the Senate and seven in the House would have changed this outcome. We know now who the “rats” are and, with your help, we will vigorously challenge them in the 2020 September primaries and November general elections.

I will very soon begin writing an after action review, and will schedule an open forum for the very near future. It is important for pro-life folks to correctly understand what happened and how it happened so we can improve our efforts. The fact of the matter is that the treacheries and failures by unscrupulous and smarmy politicians, and the devastatingly effective false narrative perpetrated by dishonest media practitioners and outlets, were also matched by failures within our own pro-life movement and churches.

To be very clear, none of this came as a surprise to me. I have been publicly warning since 2015, somewhat frantically just one year ago, about what has now actually happened. It was not solely a matter of the other side investing so much, it was also a matter of the chronic disunity on the pro-life side, with each organization remaining stubbornly determined to do its own thing, together with apathy and ignorance (or worse) in too many churches, all leaving Rhode Island Right to Life starved of the resources and support needed to hold the line at the State House.

These deficiencies will need to be quickly addressed and rectified if we hope to ever turn this around, or prevent things from getting even worse. Please stay tuned for further information from Rhode Island Right to Life and, until then, join me in praying that the Good and Gracious Lord of Life will give each and every one of us the wisdom and courage to do what needs to be done to turn this around.
