I try as often as I run across them to bring to our readers’ attention commercials which are in no way intentionally pro-life but which affirm the importance of unborn life and our duty to protect these babies.
As it happens I first saw “Lake” out of the corner of my eye while I was writing something for NRL News Today. Please understand what follows is not an endorsement for MassMutual about which I know nothing except it is trying to convince you and me to buy their life insurance. It is, however, a few words of praise for a powerful commercial
It begins with one adult and four daughters of various ages joyfully jumping into a lake. The theme of the ad is found in the first six words: “What is an act of mutuality?” It is many things, according to the ad, beginning “with a single mother preparing her daughters for the curve balls that life throws.”
But from our single-issue perspective, the key is a line about preparing—“planning”—so that “by the time this little guy [her unborn baby whom we see in a profile shot] is ready for college, she [cutting to one of her young daughters] will be too.”
The commercial ends thusly. An act of mutuality [see the woman who is now in her 60s] is
“sharing this retirement with those who make life worth living [a shot of a young girl, presumably a granddaughter]. Every way we look out for those we love is an act of mutuality.”
What to say? First, this “little guy” (like all little guys and little gals) is just as much a member of the family, and the family’s future, as is everyone else. That comes through naturally, loud and clear.
Second, mutuality is more than word in a commercial. It is “look[ing] out for those we love.”
It is a reminder that we are all in this together and each time we look out for those we love, we are strengthening the family and becoming a more complete and caring human being.
The difference—the additional ingredient—with pro-lifers is we look out for little ones who will never know our names.
