This is an urgent alert regarding Senate Bill 165 (SB165), which would legalize physician assisted suicide in Nevada. Last month the Nevada Senate Health and Human Services Committee voted 3-2 along party lines to approve SB165.
A vote of the Senate could come as early as Tuesday. We are asking that readers please send an email to Senators Nicole Cannizarro, Marilyn Dondero-Loop, and Ben Kieckhefer. Ask them to vote “No on SB165, physician assisted suicide.”
SB165 is fatally flawed and dangerous to Nevada patients. It puts Nevada patients at great risk of coercion, abuse and denial of lifesaving treatment.
The American Medical Association says that “permitting physicians to engage in assisted suicide would ultimately cause more harm than good. Physician-assisted suicide is fundamentally incompatible with the physician’s role as healer, would be difficult or impossible to control, and would pose serious societal risks.” Code of Medical Ethics Opinions 5.7
