Stacey Abrams’s announcement and the 2020 Elections: Democrat Primary Woes

By Karen Cross, National Right to Life political director

Pro-abortion Democrats have their sights set on the 2020 elections where they hope to unseat pro-life President Donald Trump and gain at least three seats in the U.S. Senate so as to take control. This would allow pro-abortion Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to become Senate majority leader and would give him power over the legislative agenda along with pro-abortion Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), if the U.S. House remains under her control.

Schumer realizes that even if Democrats were to win the White House, they won’t be able to accomplish their radical agenda if the Senate remains under the leadership of pro-life Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY).

Today’s announcement by pro-abortion Democrat Stacey Abrams – that she will not challenge Senator David Perdue (R-GA) for one of Georgia’s U.S. Senate seats – is just the latest woe.

For one thing, several of Senator Schumer’s potential recruits for U.S. Senate races across the country are either running for president or are planning to run for president.

Former pro-abortion Gov. John Hickenlooper (D-CO), Schumer’s hopeful to run against pro-life Senator Cory Gardner (R-CO), is running for president.

Robert Francis “Beto” O’Rourke (D), former pro-abortion Congressman from Texas, has decided to throw in his hat to the presidential race rather than take on pro-life Senator John Cornyn (R-TX).

And in Montana, Schumer hoped to see pro-abortion Gov. Steve Bullock take on pro-life Senator Steve Daines (R-MT). Right now, however, Bullock is expected to be another presidential hopeful.

Speaking of presidential hopefuls, every one of the top twenty Democratic presidential candidates (who have already filed to run) support New York-style abortion-on-demand policies. Every one of them.

Thus, in addition to having candidates opt out of Senate races to run for President, adding to the Democrat’s 2020 election woes is the public outcry over their extreme position on abortion.

The public outcry began immediately after January 22, when New York Governor Cuomo (D) signed and celebrated the “Reproductive Health Act” (aka the Abortion Without Limits Until Birth and Beyond Act). The public then learned of Virginia Del. Kathy Tran (D) who admitted her bill would allow abortions up until the moment of birth. Compounding the assault, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam (D) admitted that doctors could choose not to treat abortion survivors as they would babies born in the normal fashion– infanticide by neglect.

The prospect of the “dreaded complication”—a live birth following a “failed” abortion has brought out the worse in Democrats not just in New York and Virginia but in the halls of Congress. With a tiny number of exceptions, no Democrat is in support of the Born-Alive Abortion Survivor Protection Act which requires nothing more than non-discriminatory medical treatment. No Democratic running at the federal level has voiced support for the Act.

Pro-abortion Democrats have finally publicly admitted what we’ve known for decades: they support all abortion – for any reason – even on healthy mothers of healthy babies. And they refuse to treat abortion survivors in the same manner as those babies who are spontaneously born prematurely.

On top of that, Democrats have proposed outrageous changes to the political landscape that are outside of our single-issue purview. The point is simply that Democrats have brought their 2020 election woes on themselves by their increasingly out-of-touch policies.

Nowhere is that better illustrated than their embrace of abortion “through all 40 weeks” (to quote Del. Tran) and their soft-on-infanticide position.

We can protect innocent lives by using our right to vote wisely.

Let’s hold them accountable.
